Download GPXIn de toren van de kerk leeft een vleermuizenkolonie. Vzw Vespertilio (een vzw die zich toespitst op de studie van vleermuizen in al zijn facetten), de kerkfabriek en het Regionaal Landschap Vlaamse Ardennen kregen een subsidie voor een herstelproject om de kolonie in stand te houden. Op de zolder is een kraamkolonie ingericht. Omdat vleermuizen uit zichzelf geen nesten kunnen bouwen, zijn ze afhankelijk van bestaande verblijfplaatsen. Dus de nissen werden hersteld, kabelgaten werden afgesloten en invliegopeningen geoptimaliseerd. Vleermuizen zijn Europees beschermd en veel soorten zijn bedreigd of achteruitgaand. Kerkzolders vormen sleutelplaatsen omdat de jongen van een reeks soorten daar geboren en grootgebracht worden.
''t Bakkershof is een erkend jeugdcentrum van 4 ha met kinderboerderij en is bekend om zijn boerderijkampen en plattelandsklassen. Er zijn slaapplaatsen voor groepen en families. Men biedt verschillende activiteiten aan zoals brood bakken, een tochtje met een huifkar, dieren voederen, … Je kan er ook voor een halve dag of een dagje naar toe. Op zondagvoormiddag is de cafetaria voor iedereen toegankelijk.
Dit natuurgebied van 160 ha. bestaat uit een mozaïek van verschillende bossen (Makegembos, Heilig-Geestgoed, Harentbeekbos, Bruisbos, Nerenbos, Makenbos, Luisdonkbos of Huisdonkbos en Hogenbos). Het is een deel van het Vlaams Ecologisch Netwerk en is Europees beschermd. Het is een ware hotspot van biologische diversiteit. De oude bossen van dit gebied werden door de mens nooit volledig ontgonnen en herbergen daardoor een schat aan soorten die er jongste eeuwen konden standhouden. Zo leven er hier 9 soorten vleermuizen en is het rijk aan amfibieën zoals de buur- en kamsalamander.
In de Makegemse bossen zijn er verschillende "Merelbekkersroutes" ontwikkeld. Het zijn interactieve wandelroutes speciaal gemaakt voor gezinnen met kinderen. Op elke route kom je houten gesculpteerde "Merelbekkers" tegen. Ze spelen een rol in de kindvriendelijke wandelingen die er uitgezet werden.
Deze dreef is genoemd naar Marcel Van Miegroet (1922 - 2011), een land- en bosbouwkundige aan UGent en is in grote mate verantwoordelijk voor het bosbouwkundig denken in Vlaanderen. Hij was een promotor van de natuurgerichte bosbouw, gesteund op bio-ecologische principes. Lang voordat "duurzaamheid" in 1993 een internationale betekenis kreeg, benadrukte hij de uitzonderlijke waarde van de bestendigheid van het bos. Hij was ook de drijvende kracht achter de aankoop van het Aelmoeseneiebos als proefbos. Marcel Van Miegroet nam meer dan anderen het 3de luik van zijn universitaire opdracht: maatschappelijke dienstverlening ter harte. Als blijk van erkenning werd deze bosdreef naar hem genoemd. Door een moerassig deel van deze dreef is een vlonderpad van een paar honderd meter aangelegd zodat wandelaars dit gebied kunnen doorsteken.
